Tōrō Coaching Founder
The word "Tōrō" comes from the Japanese words "tō" meaning "tower," and "rō" meaning "light."
In the late 8th century, the capital of Japan was relocated from Nara to Kyoto. The Japanese government needed to help guide people to the new capital. One way they did this was the use of Tōrō, or lanterns, as wayfinding aids. The Tōrō were placed along the roadways and paths leading to Kyoto, providing a source of light for travelers, and helping them find their way to the new capital. This was especially important as many people at that time traveled long distances on foot, and the journey could be perilous without proper lighting. The use of these lanterns was so effective, the Tōrō became a symbol of the new capital, Kyoto.
